Services Provided

Describe your contribution to the group project; eg. editing video clips, creating visual aids, assemble the powerpoint etc.

  • I got information about the future developments question which was used for our presentation by telling the audience about how medicine and science can overcome illnesses and injuries associated with the system.
  • I helped create/edit the handout sheet to help people understand the digestive system and the facts about it. We also included a couple of facts that people will not have known about the system.
  • I got visual aids that were relevant to the chosen system to put on the Powerpoint so that the audience can get a better understanding of what the digestive system looks like.
  • I helped edit the Powerpoint so the audience will be able to understand through the pictures and information.

Problems

Problems:
  • One person (Maddi) was absent one day so we could not get her information.
  • We could not find a lot of information about the question; Who discovered the system?
  • Another group was also researching the digestive system as well, and they decided to do a word search like us.
  • Another group is doing the digestive system.
Solutions:
  • Instead of finding out the person who discovered the system, we found out the person who found the different parts of the system.
  • Instead of doing a word search, we decided to not do it to avoid copying the other group.
  • Instead of finding the person who discovered the system, we decided to find the people who found the parts of the digestive system.

Resources

Resources that you have found and that the group has used in the presentation - a link to the resource must be provided. You should answer why the resource is relevant and useful, for example which of the six aspects does it answer?
This resource is helpful to our presentation as it answers the last question about the digestive system (Future Developments) because it tells us how medicine and nutrients help us to heal some diseases of the digestive system. It also tells us information about the injuries and illnesses with the digestive system.

Some illnesses and injuries that can be able to be healed by the use of medicines and nutirents are:
Crohn's Disease, which causes part of the digestive tract to become inflamed. Many people who suffers this disease have above average sugar in their diet, which may contribute to the cause of the condition or make the condition worse.

Crohn's Disease treatment:
  • Vitamin A, C, E, selenium and zinc help boost and balance immune activity.
  • Other treatments of Crohn's Disease are soothers of the mucous membrane, anti-flammatories, astringents and calmatives.
  • Reduce the amount of sugar in the diet and eliminate any food which you are allergic or intolerant.
  • Take acidophilus supplement expecially if taking antibiotics so that the natural bowel bacterica can be restored.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which is alternating bouts of diarrhea and constipation and abdominal pain.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Treatment:
  • To help overcome this disease, you have to make sure that you have adequate fibre in the diet to assist in dealing with constipation and diarrhea and help to detoxify the system.
  • Take vitamin B complex which help deal with the stres and also encourage regular control of nerve and muscle function.
  • Magnesium relaxes the nerves and also helps relieve excessive muscles contractions and spasms.
  • Antioxidants and Vitamins C and E help to relieve inflammation and damge to the tissure in the bowel wall.

This resource is helpful in our presentation as it helps answer the last question about the digestive system (Future Developments) because it tells us all the diseases associated with the digestive system and if you click on each of the links, it will tell you information about each disease and their treatment. It is also helpful as it also tells you how to avoid getting illnesses and injuries from occuring in the digestive system.

Different treatments:
  • Prescribed medicines such as antibiotics can overcome illness and injuries of the digestive system.
  • Patients who have advanced cases of different types of illnesses, the only thing that can help them is surgery.
To avoid illnesses and injuries from occuring, do not eat fat foods, and take a good multivitamin and mineral supplement to ensure that the nutrients are helpful for the system.

This picture (gif) helps answer the first question, which was "How does it work?" because as you can see in the picture, it shows you how and where the food travels through the digestive system.

The food travels from the mouth to the throat down to the stomach, where it travels through the intestines down to the anus.

This resource is helpful in our presentation as it tells us about Crohn's Disease and it's treatment. This resource elaborates more on the treatment of Crohn's Disease as it talks more about certain types of drugs that has to be taken to cure Crohn's Disease.

Crohn's Disease treatment:

Anti-inflammation drugs contain mesalamine, a substance that helps control inflammation. Sulfasalazine is the most common used of these drugs.

Cortisone or Steroids provide very effective results. The dosage is then lowered when the symptoms have been controlled.

Immune System Suppressors. Drugs that suppress the immune system are also used to treat Crohn's disease. Immunosuppressive agents work by blocking the immune reaction that contributes to inflammation.

Surgery becomes necessary when the medications can no longer control the symptoms. Two-thirds to three-quarters of patients will need surgery at some point in their life so they can heal Crohn's Disease.

Planning

My group members are:
  • Me (Anjeli)
  • Taylah
  • Maddi
  • Jessica
Our chosen system is the Digestive System.

Questions to be answered:
  1. Why do we need it? Describe what the body system does for us, what functions does it perform?
  2. What parts make up the system? Perhaps a labelled diagram of the body systen you are doing might be helpful here.
  3. How does it work? Here you could for example create a flow diagram outlining how the system should work if the individual is healthy.
  4. Who made the discoveries? Identify a scientist who first discovered the role or function of the body system. Describe their discovery and what it shows about the body systen.
  5. Future Developments. Describe how science and medicine are overcoming injury or illness associated with this body system.
  • Taylah will be answering the first two questions.
  • Maddi will be answering the third.
  • Jessica will be answering the forth.
  • I will be answering the fifth.
JOBS:
  • Powerpoint (Me and Jessica)
  • Hand out/ Worksheet (Taylah)
  • Information of the questions (All of our group)
  • Finding different resources e.g videos, games etc. (Maddi)
  • Visual aids (Me and Jessica)
  • Editing powerpoint/hand out (Me)
